An unusual approach
"One of the most important factors
considered by major perfume brands
is the 'wow factor'
when smelling a perfume on a blotter
in a perfume store.
One of the most important factors
considered by me
is the 'wow factor'
when smelling a perfume during,
and especially, at the end of the day".
The main focus of the perfume industry is on the top-notes. Where a perfume composition consists of top-, heart- and base notes, the top notes are the most volatile and disappear quickly, usually within 20 minutes. Then the heart of the perfume opens, and last for several hours. The dry down, provided by the base notes can last for as long as 72 hours. There is a tradeoff for longevity, the sillage will be less, resulting in a close to body perfume.
I prefer the use of top notes only as blenders for the heart and base. I've created perfumes that start stinky, only to reveal themselves after 10 minutes as true beauties that easily last 24 hours. My perfumes won't fill a room. Won't give you a trail. But when a person comes close to you, you bet he or she will be impressed by your heavenly scent.
